Taare Zameen Par makes for an interesting choice because it's hugely different from the regular films that Bollywood churns out. It's sensitive but never over the top, it's emotional but doesn't drag. It's a film that is ultimately about the trial and triumph of the human spirit. The storyline is simple enough. Ishaant Sharma (Darsheel Safary) suffers from dyslexia but is mistaken by others including his parents as spoilt and undisciplined. The film goes onto show the boy's struggle until his teacher Aamir Khan enters the story and makes it clear that Ishaant is an immensely talented boy who needs to be understood. And yet the complexity arises from the characters. The film has an independent spirit to it. Aamir Khan is the only major superstar in the film and he doesn't enter the film until the second half. The main protagonist, child actor Darsheel Safary is a newbie while Tisca Chopra is a television actor. Right here in Pakistan, Taare Zameen Par was immensely appreciated. Some schools even ran the films for teachers and students. In India, the subject of Indian education was revisited because TZP managed to hit a nerve with ease.
