The Los Angeles Auto show has developed a reputation for unveiling high-mileage low pollution alternative technologies. This time around Ford has signaled a strong commitment to matching Toyota's hybrid ambitions.
Toyota's Prius and General Motor's Volt have already been revealed. While hybrids currently only constitute 3.5% of the competitive American automobile market, increasing pressure on gas prices and regulatory pressures are expected to increase their popularity.
The Ford Mercury Milan Hybrid is distinguished by its ability to cruise up to 47 miles per hour on electric power alone, a key edge over competitors.
Competitors are also casting wary glances at Hyundai which claims to introduce a revolutionary lithium polymer battery which should be able to exceed the capacity of competitors by a factor of 20.
Car companies are also focusing on energy alternatives particularly compressed natural gas which is an area of intereste for Toyota and Honda.
