The FDA is very cautiously saying that jalapenos may actually have been the cause of many recent cases of salmonella poisoning. Many of those who became sick after eating tomatoes had eaten those tomatoes in salsa with jalapenos. The

The FDA's caution may be a result of the hundreds of thousands of dollars lost by the food industry as tomatoes were seriously avoided. Many involved in the tomato growing, processing, shipping and packaging industries are furious and will not be able to recover their losses. There's a trade-off the FDA has to be careful to reduce the number of people harmed by a potential food issue but at the same time not be too rash in their crying fire.

The FDA is still looking into a number of different possibilities apparently, but tomatoes were removed from the front of the list. Now that salsa is one of the main suspects, how will Mexican restaurants fare under the heat?
